Seaside, Florida

July 5, 2013 by Dawn Pasco

seaside florida

Welcome to Seaside, Florida!  A quaint community where bike riding and walking is the main form of transportation. The Truman Show starring Jim Carrey was filmed here years ago.  Seaside encompasses simple living in idyllic and beautiful surroundings.  My husband and I had the opportunity to visit Seaside in early May.  These are some snapshots I took with my IPhone.  Unfortunately  the weather wasn’t idyllic during our stay, but we had a nice time and enjoyed getting away and exploring somewhere new.  It’s a great place for a girls or couples weekend getaway.  In my opinion it’s also a great place for families with young children.  Panama City airport is only about a half hour away and is small and easy to get around.  Once you are in Seaside there really isn’t a need for a car.  We rented one, but mostly walked or biked everywhere.

The architecture of the homes and buildings in Seaside remind me a lot of New England which is one of my favorite areas of the United States.  Several airstream trailers line the main road with all sorts of delicacies from hot dogs to gourmet grilled cheese.  They are within walking distance from  the beach and are a great place for a quick bite to eat.

seaside dining collageMy friend Kristine told me about Seaside years ago.  Her family loves to go there ever summer. Thanks to Kristine, I came prepared with a list of eating places to try.   These are a few of her favorites and I enjoyed them as well.

  1. Bourbon Vanilla French Toast at Fish Out of Water, WaterColor Inn.  I shared the recipe for it here.
  2. Key Lime Pie on a stick.  This is wonderful, but very rich and decadent.  You can purchase it at several places like the Shrimp Shack and the airstream trailers.
  3. Shrimp and Grits at The Great Southern Cafe.  This was one of my favorite places to eat.  We went there for dinner and breakfast.
  4. The Shrimp Shack.  Eat boiled shrimp while overlooking the ocean or in our case sit in the little eating area while it’s pouring rain.

Sunny moments on the beach.  The photo I didn’t show you is of me wrapped in a blanket with the wind blowing 50mph.  Really, it was that bad.

coastal living

We rented a one bedroom house overlooking the ocean.  The above pictures are of our bedroom and living room. This is definitely my idea of coastal living!  The only downside is the homes in Seaside are situated very close together.  Fortunately we didn’t have noisy neighbors.
