Teen Speak

February 17, 2016 by Dawn Pasco

Teen Speak

I’ve always had a hard time remembering numbers, but words I remember. Over the past year I’ve noticed there seems to be a whole new vocabulary amongst teens or at least my 16-year-old daughter and her friends.  Not all of the words are new, some are words used in a different context.

I remember an incident when I was in grade school grocery shopping with my mother and younger brother.  Out of the blue I called him a dildo. My mother was horrified and told me not to use that word. I thought I made the word up and in true rebellious fashion said it several times. My defense was I made it up and what did it mean anyway? My brother was as clueless as I was and my mother wouldn’t tell me what it meant. I tried to look it up in the dictionary, but had no idea how to spell it. It took me years before I knew what it meant. If you don’t know you’ll have to look it up because I’m not going to tell you either.

skurntin

I often blame my husband’s side of the family for my daughter’s rebelliousness. There’s no question that is where she gets her stubbornness. My husband, his brothers and my daughter are all Taurus the Bull. However, when it comes to rebelliousness there may be little glimpses of me in there somewhere. If you have a teenager maybe you’ve heard a few of these words or phrases as well.

That’s so savage meaning being rude, but in a funny way.

Craccy– busted or when you’re acting wild.

throwing shade– subtly dissing someone

lit– fun

snipe– to take or steal

skurnt (in)-drive away or run away really fast, skidding out

tweaking– freaking out

My children often accuse me of trying to be a hipster, but I won’t be using these words. I already have my own love language.

Your post made me laugh! I haven’t heard Brie use these words but I’m sure she has heard them. I will bring these up to her at dinner time it’ll make for fun conversation.

I’d be curious if Brie has heard any of them or maybe it’s their squad’s code language 🙂

I think our squad should make up their own code language 🙂 Our kids would really be appalled then 🙂
