Kentucky Derby Pie

November 18, 2014 by Dawn Pasco

kentucky derby pie

I love pecan pie and chocolate and when you mix the two together you get this Kentucky Derby Pie.  My friend Anne shared this pie with me.  It’s delicious, looks pretty and makes a great Thanksgiving dessert.  If your in the mood to take your pecan pie to the next level give this one a try.

kentucky derby pie

I came across this Derby Pie recipe years ago in the newspaper.  It has since become a staple on our Thanksgiving table.  If you love pecan pie and chocolate this recipe is a must try!  It’s very simple too, especially if you use a frozen pie crust, I always do. Add a scoop of vanilla ice cream and gobble, gobble!!  Anne

I grew up having pecan pie for Thanksgiving and still love my mom’s recipe to this day. However, it is nothing like Derby Pie. Hers is very sugary and gooey, with no chocolate. I was first exposed to Derby Pie when Lisa Moseley brought me an “official” Derby Pie from Kentucky and then again, when we ran the Kentucky Derby Marathon in Louisville one year. I quickly went on the hunt for a good recipe and my family fell in love with one called Kennedy’s Derby Pie. My kids definitely prefer the Derby Pie over Nanny’s Pecan Pie but I enjoy either. Thanks for sharing your recipe – I’ll have to test it out soon!

Let me know what you think Shelley! I’ve never had an “official” Derby Pie so I wonder if it’s very similar. You and Lisa both have some great recipes! Have a great Thanksgiving!

I tried a chocolate pecan pie last year for Thanksgiving and it turned out wonderful. Thanks for the recipe and reminding me about this wonderful combination of flavors. This is a perfect pie to share through the holiday season with family and friends.

Yum! My mother-in-law makes hers with butterscotch chips and is divine as well.

I’ve never tried a pecan pie with butterscotch chips, but I can see where that would taste really good as well. I will have to give it a try sometime. Thanks for sharing!

This is one of our favorite pies. I’ll have to try this recipe. It looks a little different than mine. Your looks so perfect with the pecans all in a row! 🙂

I hope you enjoy it Denise. Anne did a great job of arranging the pecans. I’m not so sure mine would look as pretty. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
