An Easy Way to Create a Color Palette for a Room

Creating a color palette for a room just got easier with my new favorite find.  While collecting images of offices I love on Pinterest,  I came across a post from Ask Anna on How to Create a Design Board. I could spend hours creating design and vision boards which is one of the reasons I run out of time to actually do something with those ideas.  However, during my research process I discovered a gem that could save you tons of time when trying to figure out a color scheme for a room.

Ana uses Sherwin-Williams Chip It to match colors from pictures of rooms that she pins.  This tool is genius!  You simply drag a chip it button into your bookmark bar, upload a photo you like and it matches the colors to Sherwin-Williams 1,500 paint colors.   You can learn more about it here.  It’s super easy to use and you can upload images from your computer or the internet. If you create an account it also saves your images.

I’m currently redoing my office area and my inspiration piece is this feather pillow which I fell in love with after seeing it on one of my favorite blogs The Inspired Room.  My home is predominately painted in warm colors and I’m trying to transition to more of the creamy whites and warm grays without having to totally redo everything.  Below is the color palette Sherwin-Williams Chip It matched to my feather pillow from World Market.

The Chip It tool gives you the first palette of colors and if you click on an edit colors tab it gives you a second option for colors.   I had already decided on a few that are different from these, but similar in tone with the help of my neighbor who is a designer.  I knew I wanted to have a lot of gold accents and pops of blue.  The wall color I chose is Sherwin-Williams Magnetic Gray which has some green and blue tones to it.  When I share my office makeover I will include details of everything.

Inspiration for color palettes  can be found in photos of nature, artwork, fashion and pretty much everywhere.  I don’t know how long the Sherwin-Williams Chip It  has been around, but it makes a great starting point for picking out a color palette for a room.  Let me know what you think.

Those colors are so pretty! At some point I want to re-do some rooms in our house, so I’m pinning this for future reference! Thanks Dawn!

Chip It is a great place to start. The color might not be exact, but you can compare it to other colors with similar tones. I think picking out colors can be tricky. It looks so different when it’s on the wall due to lighting.
