A Farm Themed Wedding

August 28, 2014 by Dawn Pasco

farm theme wedding

My friend Mary gives fabulous parties.  I’ve featured her candy party, Halloween party and a few ideas from her graduation party.  This past March her sister Molly got married and had a farm themed wedding.  Creativity and the ability to pull off large parties must run in the family.  Molly shared with me her photo album of pictures taken by a friend and the details that went into planning her wedding.  From the table decor to the favors for gifts one can tell a lot of love and thought went into planning this wedding.  There are lots of great little touches that you could use for a farm themed bash.  Molly shares all of the details below.

farm theme centerpieces

Our March wedding was located in Scottsdale, AZ. My husband (who happens to be a farmer) and I both grew up on a farm; myself in Illinois and he in Iowa. We wanted to bring a little bit of our country roots to our desert home in Arizona. Our “corny” decor consisted of photographs I took during the previous year’s harvest back in Iowa. I uploaded the photos to Prinstagram and then received the small prints via mail. The centerpieces on the picnic tables consisted of local olive oil and vinegar bottles that I up-cycled w/ yarn, mini clothespins and the Prinstagram pics. Each bottle contained stems of lavender and wheat. I also fashioned the trays that the centerpieces were on from barn-wood (from home) and jute for the handles.

In addition to the bottles on the trays, I also used old jam jars filled w/ dried lavender and beeswax tea lights as well as mix matched vintage (and farm-themed) salt and pepper shakers. The picnic table runners were simply cut from paint drop cloths. Vintage carafe contained fresh squeezed lemonade garnished w/ lemon wheels.

For food we went with good ol’ Portillos from Chicago. We had hot dogs, Italian beef, french fries, chopped salad and chocolate cake. I also ordered sweet corn sugar cookies from Etsy (Not Betty Cookies by Kathryn Harter—amazing!) and put together a s’mores station. In addition to the buffet style cuisine I also had beef jerky and corn nuts as snacks on the cocktail tables and bar—“you can take the gal out of the country, but you can’t take the country out of the gal ;-)”.

Sweet Corn Gift Bags
The gift/favor table was adorned w/ farm decor and old family wedding photos attached to bicycle spokes w/ clothespins. The “farm favors” consisted of lavender-lemon lotion bars I made w/ beeswax, shea butter, vitamin E, dried lavender and lavender and lemon essential oils. I used rooster and hen silicon molds to shape the bars; each were packaged individually in mini tins I ordered from Amazon. I also stamped and filled muslin bags w/ “Iowa Sweetcorn” and “Illinois Sweetcorn” (when I first met my husband we argued over who’s sweetcorn was better).
tie the knot wedding favor
The final favor was created by my good friend Sara Werner (Sew Creates on Etsy). She made and individually packaged elastic hair ties w/ corn and rooster charms. Card stock that the bands were attached to read: “Cock-a-doodle-I-do” and “Tie a knot and hold on”.
Molly and Hubby
Our entertainment was provided by our friends Muskellunge Bluegrass. Nothing says a hoedown like some Bluegrass music!
Thanks for sharing your wedding photos with me Molly!  I will post a separate mini tutorial in the next week or two on how to make the lotion bars.

Wow, every detail was perfect! Guests really enjoy these personal touches in weddings and it looks like this wedding was spot on! I love the corn element in so many places, but balanced out nicely with the lavendar and wheat. Her dress….Beautiful!

I loved the cowboy boots with the dress. That’s the mark of a true country girl in my book.
