A Thoughtful & Easy DIY Gift

May 14, 2014 by Dawn Pasco

#I AM Gift Box

My friend Angela shared with me a brilliant, easy, inexpensive and thoughtful gift idea.  For lack of better words, I’m going to call it The I AM BOX.  What’s even better is that her husband came up with the idea to make it for their daughter as a birthday gift.   I think some cash was also included with the gift, but I love the simple sincere thought behind this gift.

The only materials you need are a box or some other little decorative container, paper, pen or computer.  You simply write down personality traits and characteristics of the recipient on strips of paper and put them in a box that they’ll treasure for years to come.  Who doesn’t want to be reminded of how great they are?

My daughter’s 15th birthday is today.  Life can be like a roller coaster for teenagers, especially for girls and their mothers.  I think it’s important to remind them of how special they are and celebrate their unique qualities.  I think the I AM BOX would also make a nice gift for high school or college graduates.

#I am words

I found my cute little box at Target which happens to match the colors in my daughter’s room.  Hallmark also carries similar boxes with a ribbon tie. If you’re feeling crafty you could also decorate a small box with scrapbook paper to make it even more personal.  I used the computer to list my daughter’s personality traits and used different fonts for each word. I also printed it on heavier cardstock paper.

Each year, I think it would be fun to add more phrases to her box. I also put a gift card to her favorite store in the box.  The gift card will be spent and used up pretty quickly, but the I AM BOX is something she will always treasure.

Another gift idea I’ve shared  is this little box of sunshine  care package which makes a great gift for someone going through tough times.

Thanks Anne, you are so right! We could all use an I Am Box.

Lovely. Thanks for reminding me of the Box of Sunshine! I have a couple of people who could use that right now! I think that is brilliant.

FYI, I came across darling boxes perfect for the I AM BOX at Tuesday Morning. They have a nice little magnetic closure, and in pretty prints.

Thanks for sharing this gift idea with me Angela. I knew as soon as you told me about it I had to make one and share it on my blog.

Great idea. Our daughter’s sixteenth birthday was last week and it was not very special for her because my husband was out of town, her one sister is away at college and the other one was working. I felt terrible that we weren’t able to make a big deal out if it and she was so sad. We plan on doing something this weekend and that “I am” box would be perfect.

That truly is an awesome idea! I love it! A long time ago I made books for the kids where each page was something I hoped for them…similar concept.

I love this idea. I will have to make one for Brie. It’s hard to believe Lauren is 15! Wow where has the time gone…..?
