Non-Traditional Christmas Gift Wrap

December 17, 2013 by Dawn Pasco

#Christmas packages

I typically like to stick with a color scheme when I wrap my Christmas gifts.  My kids are at the age when I can finally use gift wrap that doesn’t have snowmen, reindeer or Santa’s on it. Not that there’s anything wrong with using gift wrap with snowmen, Santa’s or reindeer.  There are some pretty cute prints out there.  I just like a less busy look or as my daughter likes to say “boring” look.   She hates burlap which I happen to really love.  I also like to do something different each year.

This year I was inspired by some peacock ribbon I found at Hobby Lobby while shopping with my friend Diane.  She also likes using non-traditional gift wrap and has a knack for gift wrapping.  I purchased a few other spools of ribbon to complement it.  I decided to go with a green and white color scheme.   After wrapping a few gifts, I felt like I needed a third color to add the mix.  I broke out my huge role of kraft paper and wrapped a few gifts in it as well.  I’ve found you have to be careful with what you wrap in white because it shows through the paper.

I was also drawn to feathers this year.  I found some feathers in the craft aisle and they even had peacock feathers.  I also used Christmas sprigs on top of my packages.  You can find them half price most of the time at craft stores during the holidays.

Our Christmas tree is in our sunroom which has a more natural and rustic feel.  I used burlap ribbon as garland for my tree and this year I added some clusters of twigs coming out of it.  I gathered a bunch of sticks from my yard and spray painted them with fake snow. ( Note to self, fake snow comes off very easily when you touch it. ) I like how the sticks give my tree some dimension.   Last year’s tree I added clusters of dried fountain grass plumes which was inspired by my friend Miki.  I also used them on last year’s Christmas packages. I love when decorations are free and you can bring some of the outdoors in, especially during the winter months.  I used a soft quilted fluffy white throw I found at Marshall’s Home Goods for my tree skirt.   Tree skirts can be expensive and I liked the look of the throw better.

A lot of work goes into decorating a Christmas tree and wrapping gifts.  Sometimes we get so busy we never really enjoy all of the effort we’ve put into making the holidays festive.  I hope you grab a cup of hot cocoa or perhaps a glass of wine and enjoy your tree this year!  I know I plan on it.  If you have any gift wrapping or tree trimming tips I’d love to hear them.  Please share in the comments.

Wow. The gifts are too pretty to unwrap!!! Gorgeous!!! That is an area where I am definitely challenged! Maybe in a few years when Remi no longer cares if she has Santas and snowmen on the wrapping, I will come to you for help! 😉

I’m surprised Lauren hasn’t complained yet this year. Your time will come 🙂 I guess that’s one of the perks of having older children. It goes by so fast. I miss the toys.

Beautiful! what a cozy warm tree. The packages are very fun. I like to tie big , thick ribbon bows on my special gifts.

Thanks Kristin! I can be a little challenged sometimes with bows. So I often wind up making knots 🙂

I love this! I always want to try coordinating my presents every year and it never gets done! But I am going to pin it for next year because your presents are truly gorgeous and so is your tree!!

Thanks so much Michelle. I’ve actually found it’s easier when I just stick to 1-3 wrapping papers. Then I don’t have as much waste after Christmas. I can also use this paper year round.
