Simple Joys

February 1, 2013 by Dawn Pasco

favorite candles
I love to burn candles in the winter.  A friend of mine introduced me to scentsy which is a cleaner way to burn wax, but still have a nice scent fill your home.  You also don’t have to worry about remembering if you’ve blown out a candle.  The wax melts in a ceramic warming pot which comes in many different styles.  The luna scent is a nice clean scent and one of my favorites.   While I love having a scentsy warmer, I also love the look of candlelight so I haven’t given up on candles completely.  Trapp candles are a favorite brand and the Black Pepper scent is my favorite.  I know it sounds strange and I don’t even know how to describe the scent, but it’s great.  Unfortunately it can be a hard one to find in stores.  I also love Pickwick candles which are made locally in Kansas City and love many of their scents.  The Citrus Thai is a favorite.  I have provided some links on where you can find these products.

amaryllis

amaryllis

My friend gave me an amaryllis bulb back in November and thankfully reminded me to plant it around the middle of December.  I’m a wanna be Gardener, but not particularly good about watering plants which is one of the reasons I love succulent plants.  I have been patiently waiting for the bulb to blossom into this beautiful plant and was a little skeptical at first.  I’m also not a very patient person.  It finally blossomed this week and it brings me joy during these winter months.  It is a reminder of the Spring weather to come while the snow flurries about.  We have had drastic  weather changes in Kansas this week.  Monday it was 70 degrees and Wednesday it was snowing.   It was nice to be able to get outside and take a walk in the sunshine without a coat in January.  That in itself is a simple joy.

favorite games
favorite games by dpasco on Polyvore

I love to play board games.  Growing up my family often played board games and I have happy memories of playing Sorry, Monopoly, Pay Day, Mystery Date, Life, Clue, Masterpiece and who can forget Candyland.  As an adult I can’t say I enjoyed Candyland quite as much, but my kids sure did.   One of my children’s favorite games was Apples to Apples.  It’s also one I really like as an adult.  Our favorite card game is Five Crowns.  My parents introduced me to the game years ago and we’ve shared it with several friends who also love it.  It’s one the whole family can play, but mostly for kids roughly over the age of  10.  Farkle and Scattergories are also family favorites.  As my kids have gotten older they don’t enjoy an old fashioned board game quite as much, but they still bring me joy.

#special k flatbread sandwiches

Some people can eat the same thing for breakfast and lunch every day and not get tired of it.  However, I’m not one of those people.  I particularly have a hard time coming up with different things to eat for breakfast.  If I had the metabolism of a 16 year old boy I would eat pastries for breakfast every day.  I’m not a morning person so I don’t like to spend a lot of time preparing something to eat.  To me a lot of time translates to more than 5 minutes.  I found this box of  Special K Flatbread Sandwiches at Sam’s Club and thought I would give them a try.  They take 1 min. and 30 sec. to heat in the microwave.  I bought the sausage cheese and egg sandwich and they are surprisingly tasty.  They can also be found at your local grocery store.

Here is an update on a post I wrote a few weeks ago. I just read on MSN that the girl who was fighting for the right to use her given birth name in Iceland got it approved and is no longer called “girl”.  If you missed this story you can read about it here.

What did you find joy in this week?

My kids always wanted to play Monopoly or Life but I always begged them to play Sorry (my favorite!). I bought Disney Sorry too to try to make it more enticing! I don’t like games that go on and on forever. I may have to check out your 5 Crowns game. I also love Mexican Train Dominoes.

We are in need of a new family game that 5 can play – I’m going to try out 5 Crowns too!

It is a fun card game. I hope you enjoy it. I haven’t seen it at Target or Walmart, but usually toy stores and Barnes and Noble carry it. I’m sure you can also get it online.

Oh! I want to find that Five Crown Card game. We love to play cards. Is that at Target?

It’s a great game. We will have to show you and John how to play. I don’t think Target and Walmart sell it, but I’ve seen it at toy stores and Barnes and Noble.
