Curly Girl Designs

January 31, 2013 by Dawn Pasco

I love this quote and card from Leigh Standley of Curly Girl Designs.  She designed this card for artist Kelly Rae Roberts.  I wrote about Kelly Rae in a past post here.  You can read the story behind the inspiration for the card on Kelly Rae’s blog.  The full quote says, “Things will not always be joyful, but they will most often be useful. If the seas were always calm, we would never build a better boat.”

It is in my times of restlessness that I often come up with new ideas or ways of looking at things.  I’m not always joyful (just ask my family).  I take note of my feelings, but I’m aware that they are just that, feelings and not always reality.  They are stories I tell myself.  When the stories start to wear me down I know it’s time for a change.  If everything was always easy, I would never grow and learn. Sometimes that still doesn’t stop me from wanting things to be easy though.

This card also makes me think of actor Roy Scheider’s line in the movie Jaws, “You’re going to need a bigger boat.”  Sometimes I need a broader perspective and mindset to keep fear and self doubt away so I can set sail.  I know the seas won’t always be calm, but I pray I never experience a tsunami.

That is a neat little card, and cool idea. I’m going to go looking on her site. Someone told me once that happiness is horizontal, and comes from things and people that surround you that you love and well, make you happy. Joy is vertical, or God-given. Joy is what keeps us ‘afloat’ when the happiness isn’t there or the things around us are troubling. In other words, Joy is our bigger and better boat. It seems like an odd concept, but I have found it to be true.

I loved Angela’s comment and it really is at the heart of what brings us joy. It comes from peace within everything else is fleeting. I think I’m going to have to repeat her comment in a separate post sometime.
