Elf

December 17, 2012 by Dawn Pasco

One of my favorite Christmas movies is Elf.  It used to be National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation until Elf came out.  I still love Christmas Vacation, but there is something about Will Ferrell dressed as Buddy the elf that makes me smile.  I’m also a big fan of actor Bob Newhart who is the head elf and raised Buddy at the North Pole.  I hope you take the time to watch at least one holiday movie this year.  The  Christmas season passes quickly and I find myself getting a little grumpy if I haven’t indulged in at least one holiday movie before New Years Eve.  The following are some of my favorite Christmas movies:

  1. The Holiday  starring Jude Law,Kate Winslet, Jack Black, Cameron Diaz
  2. Last Holiday starring Queen Latifah
  3. Charlie Brown’s Christmas
  4. National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation
  5. Four Christmases starring Vince Vaugh and Reese Witherspoon
  6. Dr. Suess’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas with Jim Carrey
  7. It Happened On 5th Avenue– this is a classic and I just watched it for the first time last year
  8. Shrek the Halls
  9. A Christmas Story
  10. Home Alone

What are some of your favorite Christmas movies?

In light of the shooting that happened in Newtown, Connecticut last week I’d just like to say that I hope their community finds laughter and joy in their hearts again.  My good friend lives in Newtown and I have been there several times.  It’s a quaint New England town whose downtown reminds of Andy Griffith’s Mayberry.  I pray for hope, faith and healing for their community and especially for those families who lost a loved one.

I absolutely love all of these movies, too Dawn. I also love Jimmy Stewart on Its a Wonderful Life and I enjoy the remake of Miracle on 34th Street with Dylan McDermott.

I’m not sure if I’ve seen the remake of Miracle on 34th St. with Dylan McDermott, but I like him. I vaguely remember it in the theaters. I will have to put it on my list this holiday season. Thanks Cindy!

I forgot about Love Actually. I haven’t seen it a long time. I’ll have to rent it. Thanks Denise!

I believe “Lethal Weapon” takes place at Christmas time, so I will go with that one.

Love love love ELF! I love the scene when he walks into the coffee shop – YOU DID IT! THE WORLDS BEST CUP OF COFFEE!

Great list of movies. Home Alone is another favorite of mine too.

Oh geez….I can’t believe I forgot about one of my very favorites, and this is no joke: “A Muppet Christmas Carol”. Michael Caine is outstanding as Scrooge and the songs are fantastic. We watch it every year.

Did I see that with you when I was in middle school? I will have to revisit it.

No. I thought it came out around 1992 and that’s exactly when it came out (I’m that good). I first saw it with Julie. We owned it on VHS and now own it on DVD. But the odd thing is the DVD actually cuts out a scene entirely, and I am not sure I like it. I say that because the scene is incredibly sad (Scrooge loses his fiance) so I was tired of tearing up. They show a piece of it, but remove the tearjerker of a song. Maybe it was too much for a Muppet movie. But without it, it removes a little bit of the magic of the final song, which takes the music of the tearjerker song and changes the lyrics to make it much more upbeat.

I’ll have to watch it again this weekend. I always forget how good the music is.
