Serendipity & Drumming

February 9, 2012 by Dawn Pasco

ser·en·dip·i·ty

/ˌsɛrənˈdɪpɪti/ Show Spelled[ser-uhn-dip-i-tee]

noun

1.

an aptitude for making desirable discoveries by accident.
2.

good fortune; luck: the serendipity of getting the first job she applied for.
There have been many instances of serendipity in my life, but the one which currently comes to mind is learning how to play the drums.  I have always had an interest in playing the drums and when my son decided to quit taking guitar lessons 4 years ago I suggested drums.  At the time I wasn’t thinking about the loud tapping of the hi-hat, snare and bass which would emanate throughout the house. He found his niche in drumming and is part of his high school drum line.  In the back of my mind I wished that I had taken drum lessons when I was his age.  Maybe I’d be touring with Rob Thomas or at the very least playing in a band at our local pub.  As chance has it my son’s teacher had an opening this summer and we already own a drum set.  I asked if he’d be interest in taking me on as a student and surprisingly he didn’t fall over laughing.   The rest is history and the following are some of the lessons I’ve learned from drumming.

Wow, beautiful example of serendipity in your own life, Dawn. It sounds like drumming is very fulfilling for you. So happy for you that you’ve found your niche. 🙂
