The Secret to Making Mugs Look New

July 23, 2014 by Dawn Pasco

cleaning coffee cups

Do you know the secret to making porcelain mugs look brand new? I bought these white mugs at Target a few years ago and they get lots of use every day when my husband and I enjoy our morning cup of coffee.  I also use them for tea and hot chocolate during the winter months.   As you can see, unfortunately  these porcelain mugs don’t stay pristine white on the inside for long.   I’m a bit particular and hate stains on things.

I contemplated buying a new set of white mugs I was eyeing at Pottery Barn and thought that maybe if I spent a  little more money my mugs wouldn’t turn grey and scratched inside over time.  As luck has it, I told the sales lady at Pottery Barn my dilemma and she let me in on a little secret.  It’s called Bar Keepers Friend.

Bar Keepers friend

I’ve had a can of Bar Keepers  Friend under my kitchen cabinet for years.  I used to use it to clean my former stainless steel sink.  I never really took the time to read all of this miracle cleaners other uses.  You can use it on porcelain, fiberglass, glass cooktops, copper, tile, and brass.   It removes rust and those pesky marks in your coffee cups.

Simply pour a few granules of Bar Keepers Friend on a damp cloth or directly on a wet surface and scrub off the stains.  A little can of Bar Keepers Friend will save you money and have your mugs looking brand new in less than 5 minutes.  Unfortunately, the stains return over time, so it’s something you have to do on a regular basis if you want your mugs looking sparkling clean.

Have you used Bar Keepers Friend before and if so what have you found it helpful in cleaning?  This isn’t a sponsored post I just wanted to pass along my little secret.

I have had a lot of success with this too. I wanted to add that if you have any that are very stubborn, use the Bar Keeper’s friend with a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. It usually gets the very last bits for me.

Thanks Barbara! That’s a great tip, sometimes there may be a few small marks left and those Magic Erasers do wonders.
